Free Pattern for a two-color brioche stitch cowl in the round

This cowl features bold colour contrasts and is knitted in a super chunky yarn so that it is quite a quick project. The instructions are essentially those for knitting two colour brioche stitch in the round. The written instructions are free below or alternatively:  Try a free trial of skillshare to watch my class on how to make this cowl.

I have started and finished with a garter stitch edge.

Two-colour brioche stitch cowl in the round:

Materials:

Drops Eskimo 50g/50m (1.8 oz/54 yds) two balls of Petrol (05) and two balls of Green/Yellow (29) or your choice of super chunky yarn.
Circular needles 40 cm long, 9 mm in size (US 13) or choose the size to obtain gauge.
Stitch marker (optional).
Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Gauge:
Over stocking stitch the gauge is 11 stitches and 15 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) before blocking, using 9 mm (US 13) needles.

Measured over two color brioche stitch, knitted flat and not blocked, the gauge is 9 stitches and 24 rows (12 main color rows) to 10 cm (4 inches) using 9 mm (US 13) needles.

For a 70 cm cowl you would need 7x9=63 stitches but I have rounded down because brioche stitch needs an even number of stitches.

Abbreviations:

sl1yo                    Slip one stitch purlwise with the yarn in front
brp                       Brioche purl the next stitch with its yarnover
brk                       Brioche knit the next stitch with its yarnover
kfb                       Knit into the front and back of the next stitch to increase

Start Knitting the Cowl:

Garter stitch edge:

Using the contrast colour:
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2: Purl.
Round 3: Knit.

Setup rounds for two color brioche stitch:

Round 1 (using main color): knit1, sl1yo; repeat to the end of the round.
Round 2 (using contrast color): sl1yo, brp1; repeat to the end of the round.

Two color brioche stitch in the round:
Round 1 (using main color): brk1, sl1yo; repeat to the end of the round.
Round 2 (using contrasting color): sl1yo, brp 1; repeat to the end of the round.

Height of cowl:
For a total height of 20 cm I ended the brioche stitch pattern 19 cm (7.5 inches) from the cast on edge.

Ending brioche and knitting the garter stitch edge to finish:
Use the contrasting colour.
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2: Purl.
Round 3: Knit6, (kfb, k11) 4 times, kfb, k7. This increases the stitch count by five stitches, spread evenly over the round.
Turn your work and cast off using a needle in a larger size.
Weave in ends and enjoy!
